Bio: Dr. Joseph Lohmuller knew one thing when he went to medical school at Indiana University: He did not want to be a surgeon. He planned to specialize in internal medicine and oncology like his father. Two months in the operating room, however, and he was hooked. After completing his residency in General Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., in 1991, he joined the Davenport Surgical Group, where he continues to see patients and serves as President of the seven-physician practice.
Dr. Lohmuller served as the Trauma Program Medical Director at GMC Davenport for nearly 18 years before moving onto the leadership team at Genesis, and also served as the Clinical Medical Director of the Genesis Kenneth H. McKay, M.D., Center for Breast Health. He is a past president of the GMC Davenport Medical Staff and serves on numerous committees. In addition to his activities at Genesis, Dr. Lohmuller has served as President of the Iowa Chapter, American College of Surgeons and the Mayo Surgical Alumni Association. He holds positions on the boards of directors of MEDIC EMS, MedForce helicopter EMS and the Kahl Home for the Aged and Infirm and serves on several association committees. As an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery, Dr. Lohmuller also teaches and lectures at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Lohmuller is the Medical Director of a medical mission team that travels yearly to Arequipa, Peru.
Dr. Lohmuller holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Notre Dame and, in addition to his Doctor of Medicine, earned a Master of Science in Medical Genetics from IU. He and wife, Ann, reside in Bettendorf, Iowa. They have three children: Kate, Elizabeth, and Michael. When not in the Operating Room, he can be found on his bicycle or piloting his boat on the Mississippi River.
