Education Initiatives
"GAIN, GAP and GATE" are new initiatives at GMC. The programs will help youth "Gain" an interest in a career in nursing, close the "Gap" between academia and practice, and open the "Gate" to professional nursing practice at Genesis Health System.
GAIN - Genesis Adventures In Nursing
This week long summer day camp will provide an opportunity for students 12 years and older to grow an interest in the nursing profession. The camp is designed to provide an exciting weeklong adventure, where participants will have first-hand encounters in various nursing opportunities and get to experience what it may be like to be a Genesis nurse.

GAP - Genesis Apprenticeship Program
The Apprenticeship Program provides BSN nursing students who have completed their junior year, the opportunity to work one-on-one with a RN preceptor. In this 8-week summer program students will earn as they learn and get a head start to their nursing career. Applications for the 2010 program are no longer being accepted.
The Apprenticeship Program will provide:
- Individualized RN preceptor
- A paid experience
- Assessment skills
- Organizational skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Professional growth
- Exposure to professional meetings
- Opportunities to shadow nurses in additional specialties
- Opportunities to attend community socialization events
- Many other additional learning opportunities
Program Requirements:
- Rising BSN senior nursing student
- Commitment to a 8-week program
- Two instructor references
- Completed Application
- Successful Interview
- Completion and presentation of a small project
Genesis Achieving Transitional Excellence (GATE)
The GATE Program will assist new graduate nurses through the stressful transition from student to professional nurse. The program will give the graduate nurse extra guidance, education, and socialization.
The GATE Program consists of:
- Six monthly three-hour sessions
- Sessions will consist of 90 minutes of didactic material and 90 minutes of support and socialization
- New graduates will be expected to attend for the first six months. If the nurse feels the need to repeat a session, they are welcome to do so with manager approval.
- Topics include the following:
-Relationships
-Hand Off Communication
-Physician Communication
-Ethical Dilemmas
-Am I Safe Practitioner?
-Documentation

- New graduates will be able to join during any month
- Each month will include time for the participants to share clinical experiences and other concerns.
