Recreational Therapy

Recreational Therapy works to rehabilitate and restore the patients’ level of function and independence in life and recreational activities to promote health and wellness. Recreational Therapy focuses on reducing or eliminating whatever prevents or restricts participation in these activities. Limitations can be caused by an illness or disabling condition.

Therapy focuses on areas such as:

  • concentration
  • problem solving skills
  • strength
  • endurance
  • social interaction skills

In addition, leisure education counseling is used to explore and plan for leisure when discharged. Stress management skills (using HeartMath techniques) are taught to help manage emotions and to improve healthy lifestyles.

Recreational Therapy is used in Genesis Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation program for spinal cord injury and on the Behavioral Health units for coping skills for patients age 8 and above. This is accomplished through one-to-one and group therapies. All Recreational Therapy sessions are 30 minutes to one hour long. Each patient is seen at least once a day by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) while in the Behavioral Health Unit and 1-3 times per week while on the Physical Rehabilitation Unit. All of the Recreational Therapy treatments are goal oriented and aimed at improving the patient's level of functioning.

Recreational Therapy is the originator of the Access to Waves” adaptive water ski program now led by the BackWater Gamblers ski team located in Rock Island Illinois. Genesis staff remain actively involved in a volunteer capacity for this program. The “Access to Waves” ski program is held the 3rd Saturday in August at the BackWater Gamblers ski site.
