Signs & Symptoms of Prostate Cancer

Although we don't completely understand the causes of prostate cancer there are several risk factors that may be linked to the disease.  Prostate Cancer is more common in:

  • men over 50 years of age
  • African-American males
  • men with a family history of prostate cancer

Early Diagnosis

Prostate Cancer can often be found early by testing the (PSA) prostate-specific antigen in the blood and by having a (DRE) digital rectal exam (feeling the prostate through the rectum) by a doctor. These tests are recommended yearly beginning at age 50 to men who are at average risk of prostate cancer. Testing may be recommended earlier for men at high risk.

Early prostate cancer does not usually cause symptoms. Some advanced prostate cancers can cause an increase in urinary frequency, or a slow or weakened stream of urine (non-cancerous diseases of the prostate can also cause these symptoms). Some advanced prostate cancers may lead to blood in the urine, impotence and symptoms related to spread of the disease to the bones or spine.

It is important to tell your doctor if you have any symptoms so that the cause can be found and treated.
