What is an Ultrasound test?

An ultrasound (sonogram) is a diagnostic test that uses high frequency sound waves instead of x-rays to capture real time images of internal organs, structures and blood vessels.

How should I prepare for my ultrasound?

To prepare for your exam, please do the following:

Aorta (artery in the abdomen):

  • Do not eat or drink anything 8 hours before your test.

Carotid Doppler (arteries in the neck):

  • Wear a loose necked or button-down shirt.

Gallbladder/Abdomen:

  • No meats, potatoes or pasta after 7 p.m. the night before your exam.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the day before your test.
  • No smoking or chewing gum on the day of the exam.

Kidneys:

  • Do not eat or drink anything four hours before your test except water.
  • Drink 2-3 glasses of water prior to the test.

Pregnancy & Obstetrics:

  • Wear loose, comfortable, and easily removable clothing to expose your abdomen for the exam.

Pelvis:

  • Wear loose, comfortable and easily removable clothing.
  • The exam requires you to remove your clothing from the waist down. A sheet will be provided to you.
  • Prior to the scan, you will be asked to empty your bladder.

Scrotum:

  • You will be asked to remove your trousers and underwear. You will be given a sheet to cover yourself.

Thyroid:

  • Wear a loose necked or button-down shirt.

Venous Doppler:

  • Wear loose, comfortable, easily removable clothing.
  • You will be asked to remove your slack or trousers for the exam. Underwear may be left on.

What should I expect during my ultrasound?

Most exams are performed lying face up on a padded exam table. To begin the test, a thick, warm gel will be applied on the skin of the area of the exam. To create the moving images, your technologist uses a hand-held transducer and glides it over the area begin examined. After the test, the gel is easily removed with a dry cloth. Allow 30-60 minutes for you exam.
