Facet Block or Median Branch

A Facet Block or a Median Branch Block is a procedure to determine if the facet joints of your spine are causing your pain.

What to expect after this procedure:

  • If your pain is coming from your facet joints, you may get temporary relief of pain while the local anesthetic is working.
  • If your pain is not coming from the facet joints, it is not likely that you will get much relief from this procedure.
  • You can expect the sites of injection to be sore for 2-3 days following this procedure.

Comfort measures:

  • Use warm, moist heat or ice packs for soreness at the injection sites.
  • Take over-the-counter medications for soreness.
  • Use medication prescribed by your physician.

  • You may resume previous level of activity today as tolerated.

  • You may resume your normal diet.

Notify your physician if you experience:

  • Sign of infection such as fever above 100 degrees, chills, redness, swelling or drainage at the site of the injection.
