Cisplatin (Platinol)

What Does It Look Like?

Clear liquid

How Is It Given?

  • Intravenous (vein)
  • Intraperitoneal (into abdominal cavity)

Why Am I Taking It?

Cisplatin is an anti-cancer drug that stops cell growth and division. This drug is used to treat many kinds of cancer, including testicular, ovarian, bladder, cervical, bone cancers, melanoma, lymphoma, and squamous cell cancer of the head and neck. It also may be used for other types of cancer.

What Side Effects May Occur?

You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you experience. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report problems to your doctor.

Low Blood Counts

  • A drop in blood cell counts, especially platelets and white blood cells, occurs about 14-18 days after treatment.
  • Blood tests will be done to monitor your blood cell counts.
  • Call your doctor about any signs of bleeding or infection. Avoid situations where you may be exposed to people with infections.

Nausea, Vomiting, Appetite Loss

  • Occurs commonly and usually requires taking an anti-nausea drug for 24-48 hours.
  • Medication will be available to control nausea and vomiting if they occur.
  • Mouth sores may develop. Inspect your mouth daily. Rinse after meals and at bedtime with a mild salt water solution. Call your doctor if you notice any sores or bleeding in your mouth.
  • Diarrhea may occur, but usually stops within a day. Call your doctor if diarrhea does not stop, if you notice blood in your stools or if your stools are tarry.
  • Drink plenty of fluids (2-3 quarts per day) after therapy.

Hearing Changes

  • Ringing or a "stuffed" sensation in the ears may occur. The "stuffed" sensation usually subsided in 2-3 weeks.
  • Hearing loss that involves the high frequency range of sound may occur.

Kidney Function

  • Changes in the kidneys' ability to filter body wastes may occur.
  • Large amounts of intravenous and oral fluids will be given to help prevent damage to your kidneys.
  • Blood tests will be done to monitor your kidney function.
  • Call the doctor if you urinate much less than usual, or if your urine is much darker in color than usual.

Allergic Reactions

  • May have symptoms of increased heart rate, low blood pressure, facial swelling or wheezing. These can be controlled with medications. Let your doctor know if they occur.

Nervous System

  • May experience numbness, tingling, or a burning sensation in your hands and feet.

Special Notes

  • Drink 2-3 quarts of fluid a day after treatment to help preserve kidney function.
  • Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm count may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
