Why Am I Taking It?
Interleukins are substances produced naturally by the body to help white blood cells work. IL-2 is a man-made version of Interlukin-2. IL-2 is used to treat cancer of the kidney. Sometimes other drugs are given with the IL-2 to fight cancer.
What Side Effects May Occur?
IL-2 can cause some very serious effects as well as helpful effects. Often the first treatments are given in the hospital to observe for side effects. You may experience some, all or none of those listed. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur.
Low Blood Counts

A drop in blood cell counts (especially white blood cells and platelets) can occur. Blood tests will be done to monitor this.

Call your doctor if you notice signs of infection like fever or chills. Let your doctor determine if the problems are from infection or side effects from the drug.

Call your doctor if you notice any unusual bleeding or bruising; like black, tarry stools, blood in urine or stools, or pinpoint red spots on your skin. Be careful not to cut yourself when using sharp objects such as razors, fingernail or toenail clippers.

Avoid situations where you might be exposed to people with infections.
Nervous System

If you notice increased nervousness, confusion, sleepiness, depression (low mood), dizziness, faintness, blurred or double vision, call your doctor.

May cause tingling or numbness of your hands and feet.
Nausea, Vomiting, Mouth Sores, Diarrhea, Loss of Appetite

Nausea and vomiting may occur- anti-nausea drugs are available. This is fairly common.

If you have problems with diarrhea or mouth sores, call your doctor. This is fairly common.
Special Notes
-
IL-2 may cause tiredness, headache, joint pain, muscle aches, dry skin or peeling skin rash. These side effects usually go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine.

Your doctor will also monitor your kidneys and liver for changes in their function while on IL-2

Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm count may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
