Leukovorin Calcium (Leukovorin, Wellcovorin)

What Does It Look Like?

Clear liquid; White tablet

How Is It Given?

Intravenous (vein); Oral (mouth)

Why Am I Taking It?

  • Leukovorin is given in combination with 5-FU (another anti-cancer drug). Together they change the way cancer cells grow and divide. This combination is used to treat cancers of the colon, rectum, stomach, and esophagus.
  • Leukovorin is also given with another anti-cancer drug Methotrexate to help protect normal cells from this drug.

What Side Effects May Occur?

You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report any problems to your doctor.

Low Blood Counts

  • The treatment may cause a drop in white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets 7-14 days after treatment.
  • Call your doctor with any signs of infection or bleeding.
  • Avoid situations where you might be exposed to people with infections.
  • Your blood will be drawn regularly to check your blood counts while you are receiving this drug.

Nausea, Vomiting, Appetite Loss, Diarrhea, Mouth Sores

  • Nausea and vomiting are usually mild. Medicine can be prescribed to help if they occur.
  • Diarrhea is fairly common. Dietary changes often help and medication may be given to stop the diarrhea. Avoid roughage, raw fruits, vegetables, spices, and pepper.
  • Mouth sores occur frequently. It is important to keep your mouth as clean as possible by brushing your teeth and rinsing with a mild salt water solution.
  • Call your nurse or doctor if mouth and/or throat soreness develops.
  • It is possible that you may be asked to suck on ice chips before, during, and after your chemotherapy to help minimize mouth soreness.

Hair Loss

Hair loss is rare with this medication.

Skin Irritation

You may note changes in your skin and nails like redness, dryness, and peeling.

Special Notes

When used in combination with other anti-cancer drugs, changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm count may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
