What is your favorite event hosted by GHSF to attend and why?

The annual gathering around the Remembrance Tree is a personal favorite of mine. It’s a beautiful time of year, and I love taking that hour to hear the holiday music, to see the tree lit, and to celebrate the people in my life that I’ve loved and lost.

What is your favorite project we have funded and why?

The Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House will probably always be my favorite project. In 25+ years of fundraising for different organizations I’ve never felt as drawn to a mission as I do the Hospice House. When we were raising funds to build the house, one of my dearest friends was losing her battle with cancer. I learned so much about the importance of compassionate end-of-life care during that year. I’m grateful for a community that embraces and generously supports the angels providing this essential care.

What you might be surprised to know about me:

I’m an open book, so no surprises here. For anyone who’s spent more than 5 minutes with me, you know I enjoy speaking to groups about our work, can’t resist chocolate, lack all homemaker skills, love to laugh, and am waiting for an opportunity to host a talk show.

What is your favorite event hosted by GHSF to attend and why?

My favorite Genesis events are the annual spring and fall Legacy Luncheon Receptions, because they recognize those generous and far-sighted benefactors who have included the Foundation in their estate plan, insuring that their end-of-life gift will support future generations of patients and care-givers.

What is your favorite project we have funded and why?

The Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House represents the ultimate in compassionate care for those nearing the end of their earthly lives, comforting patients in preparing for death and consoling families in dealing with grief.

What you might be surprised to know about me:

I started my professional career in human service and not-for-profit administration here in the Quad Cities as a co-founder of CASI.

What is your favorite event hosted by GHSF to attend and why?

The Remembrance Tree is such a special time to gather during the holiday season and remember those we have loved and lost. Grief is tricky and certainly not short lived but time together building connections and sharing our love can help ease our pain. This special time reflecting on the lives of our loved ones while surrounded by other caring people in our community is especially healing during the holiday season.

What is your favorite project we have funded and why?

Any project that supports mothers and babies is near and dear to my heart. After having two babies at Genesis myself I know just how special our services are and I love being a part of ensuring all mothers get that same quality, joyous experience. I also believe strongly that building the very best community means supporting children from the very beginning!

What you might be surprised to know about me:

Given how much I impulsively fill silence with random chatter there is very little left people don't know about me. I love a great practical joke, am terrified of parking garages and have no patience while waiting in line for coffee. Public speaking is one of my favorite past times and I love reading a great book as much as I love being surrounded by people. I am truly honored to work alongside some of the most generous and forward thinking people every day to build a stronger community.

What is your favorite event hosted by GHSF to attend and why?

I would have to say my favorite events are the Mallard Jersey auctions that we have in partnership with The Mallards hockey team. It’s a ton of fun and it is wonderful to see the fans so supportive of our work! Boy do those fans love those Jerseys!

What is your favorite project we have funded and why?

My favorite project is the low vision clinic. We are able to pay for glasses for those in need that cannot afford to get them on their own. Having had glasses since I was in 4th grade, I understand how important it is to be able to see clearly. I am proud that we are able to provide this service to those in need.

What you might be surprised to know about me:

I have had many different types of jobs in my life but one of my first was working at a Christmas Tree farm. In the hot, hot, days of summer we trimmed the trees with a machete into the perfect “tree” shape!

What is your favorite event hosted by GHSF to attend and why?

The Genesis Foundation Pro-Am Challenge. It is great to see the community to gather in support of Genesis nursing scholarships!

What is your favorite project we have funded and why?

The Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.  There is so much involved with the Hospice House from the end of life patient care to the grief support provided to the families while at the house.  It is also assuring to see the continued bereavement process offered to family and friends after the death of a loved one.

I look forward to Doctors in Recital.  I think it is amazing that Quad City physicians and their family members donate their time and considerable talents to come together and make wonderful music for those in hospice care and in nursing homes.  To me, music is the universal language.  It speaks to everyone, and especially to people who can no longer communicate how they feel.

What is your favorite project we have funded and why?

That would have to be the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.   Hospice care is becoming more acceptable and understood by individuals and their families.  It is no longer viewed as giving up on your loved one or giving in to the disease, but as a way to provide compassionate, quality care for the end of life.  The Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House makes this possible for everyone, supported by the generosity of donors.

What you might be surprised to know about me:

I was Woodsy Owl (remember Give a Hoot! Don’t pollute!) on a US Forest Service float in a small town parade in Wyoming.  I was the only summer employee who could fit into the tiny costume.  However, once in, I had to be led around by my ‘wing’ since I could not see out the face mask!
