Genesis Cancer Program Receives American College Of Surgeons Approval
The American College of Surgeons has recognized Genesis Medical Center's Regional Cancer Center as one of the best in the country.
This recognition, known as the Commission on Cancer Approval means that Genesis Cancer Center meets national standards that ensure that cancer patients receive the best possible care. "This approval exemplifies our commitment to providing the best care to cancer patients," says Judy McFarlin, Genesis Cancer Center Director. "Our commitment goes beyond the diagnoses and treatment of cancer, we provide an individualized approach responding to the needs of our patients and their families."
Receiving care at a Commission on Cancer approved cancer program ensures that patients have access to:
-
Quality and comprehensive care close to home;
-
state-of-the-art services and equipment;
-
a multi-specialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options available to cancer patients;
-
access to cancer clinical trials such as the current trials underway with the Southwest Oncology Group and the National Surgical Breast and Bowel Project;
-
education and support activities
-
lifelong patient follow-up through a cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results; and
-
ongoing monitoring and improvement of care.
The American College of Surgeons established the Approvals Program in 1932 and approximately one-fifth of the country's hospitals, those that treat more than 80 percent of patients who are newly diagnosed with cancer, have received this recognition. In order to maintain approval, facilities with approved cancer programs must undergo an on-site review every three years.
The Commission on Cancer is composed of Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and other members representing 36 national cancer-related organizations who recognize that cancer is a complex group of diseases. The program promotes consultation among surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary cooperation results in improved patient care.
The Genesis Cancer Center is dedicated to providing quality, compassionate health care to all those in need by providing new treatment options, research and counseling in one convenient location. The Genesis Cancer Center has an extensive cancer resource center and a newly opened Reflection Room. The community is invited to visit the Cancer Center located at 1351 W. Central Park, Davenport.
