Bringing Body/Mind/Spirit Together

Genesis Explores the Effects Music And Art Have on Total Wellness

Bettendorf, IA - Research has shown the positive effects that music has upon our nervous system and in the promotion of relaxation and enhanced mental function. Art and its many forms of expression hold a deep significance to us throughout all phases of our life. Together they have more influence on us then we can possibly imagine.

Genesis will begin a four-week workshop called Art and Music for Self Discovery and Relaxation: Exploring the Effects of Music and Art on Body/Mind/Spirit. This four-week series is specifically designed to connect the participants with self expression through music, movement and art and their effects on one's health, creativity, relaxation potential and connection to Spirit. Watercolor, Caran D'ache, Japanese Sumi Brush and pastels will be the artistic mediums provided with special guidance by an Art Therapist. Participants will learn how to use music's healing energy via classical music, jazz and toning in conjunction with positive affirmations and movement. "Engaging the senses of sight and hearing in conjunction with imagination and the innate wisdom of the body will provide a relaxing and yet invigorating experience at the same time; a perfect combination for health promotion of body, mind and spirit," says Jan Treftz-Allen, Manager of Health Promotion in the Genesis Wellness Center at the Bettendorf YMCA.

Facilitators for this unique series include Colleen Curry, BME MS and Karen Lobovits, BA. Curry has been a music teacher in the Quad Cities for more than 24 years. She is also an award-winning Fiber Artist. Developing the mind, body and spirit are a part of her daily life. Lobovits has had a private practice in Art Therapy and has facilitated Art Therapy workshops for fifteen years. Lobovits is also a Certified Yoga Instructor and Reiki Master.

The four-week session will be held from 6-8 p.m., every Tuesday, beginning November 9, in the Genesis Wellness Center Classroom at the Bettendorf Family YMCA, 3800 Tanglefoot Road in Bettendorf. No knowledge of art or music is necessary. Cost is $100 per person and the class size is limited to 15 people.
