SIBSHOP
Genesis Hosts Special Event for Siblings of Children With Special Needs
Davenport, IA - Brothers and sisters of children with special needs some times have feelings that are difficult to express. At times they are overcome with sadness because their sibling cannot learn things that others take for granted. There's anger when their brother of sister's behavior problems prevent the family from doing things other families do. These are just many of the issues that will be addressed during the Genesis Sibshop.
The Therapeutic Recreation Department at Genesis Medical Center, Davenport will host this unique one-day workshop, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, September 25, on the grounds of Genesis Medical Center West Central Park.
The workshop is designed for school-age children who have a sibling with special needs. "This unique event will give the children an opportunity to talk about the good and not-so-good parts of having a sibling with a disability," says Nicole Ward, Recreational Therapist at Genesis Medical Center, Davenport. "The workshop will provide a relaxed, recreational setting that will allow participants to meet others who share the same experiences, giving them an opportunity to learn how others handle commonly experienced situations." In addition to helping the children, Sibshop will also provide parents with an opportunity to learn more about the concerns frequently experienced by brothers and sisters of people with special needs.
Sibshop is for children ages 8-13. The cost of the workshop is $15 per child, which includes supplies and lunch. Space is limited and reservations are required. For more information or to make a reservation, call the Genesis Therapeutic Recreation Department at 563-421-1440.
