SIDS Risk Reduction
To reduce the chances that your baby will die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)...
- Do place babies down for sleep only on their back until they are one year of age.
- Do put baby on a firm mattress in a crib.
- Do not use pillows, crib bumper pads, blankets, afghans or quilts over or under baby.
- Do keep the room temperature cool (about 65 degrees) when baby is sleeping.
- Do not smoke around babies or let anyone else smoke around them.
- Do not overdress or overheat your baby.
- Do breastfeed.
- Do seek medical care for your baby when he or she becomes ill.
- Do not share bed with baby or allow other children to sleep with baby.
- Do not put babies in an adult bed or a sofa to sleep.
- Do tell other caregivers of the baby to follow these simple rules.
