Genesis Hosts Motorcycle Trauma Instruction
Davenport, IA – ABATE of Iowa will conduct a Two Wheel Trauma program on Saturday, May 14 in Pavilion 2 of the Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park Campus.
The program is designed to train emergency medical service personnel to improve their skills working at the scene of bicycle, motorcycle, ATV, moped and snowmobile accidents. ABATE hopes to reduce the potential for rescuer injury due to inappropriate actions at accident scenes by instructing emergency care providers on the possible hazards.
Frank Randall, an organizer of the Two Wheel Trauma program, said motorcycle accident scenes present several hazards not present at automobile and truck accidents. “One of the objectives is to train personnel to be able to identify motorcycle parts and discuss the possible hazards of those parts. For example, exhaust pipes, kill switches, fuel switches, radiators and knowing the proper lift points,’’ Randall said.
Instructors for the Two Wheel Trauma program will be Dick “Slider’’ Gilmore, who has been an EMS provider and instructor since 1978; Anita Bailey, who has been involved in EMS since 1977 and is now EMS System Development Coordinator for 16 counties in Northwest Iowa, and Frank Prowant, a Paramedic Specialist who is deputy chief for the Ankeny, Iowa Fire Department.
The program will be held in the West Campus Conference Center and in the parking area of Pavilion 2 at Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park starting at 8 a.m. with registration. Randall said more than 50 EMS providers and nurses are registered for the program. Continuing education hours are available for EMS responders and nurses.
