Genesis, ADA And Miss Iowa Launch School Walk For Diabetes Program

Davenport, IA – Genesis, along with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and Miss Iowa 2005, Kay Pauszek, will kick-off Genesis Diabetes Awareness Week with the ADA’s School Walk for Diabetes program at St. Paul The Apostle and Fillmore Elementary schools in Davenport.

The School Walk for Diabetes at St. Paul The Apostle School will kick-off on Dec. 12 with an all-school assembly at 2 p.m.

Fillmore Elementary is planning assemblies at 1:40 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 13.

School Walk for Diabetes teaches students about diabetes and the importance of making healthy choices, including eating healthy foods and daily exercise. Pauszek will be taking the program into 20 elementary and middle schools over the course of the school year.

“We are excited to be working with the ADA and Miss Iowa,” said Marsha Menke, Manager of the Genesis Diabetes Care Center in Davenport. “By reminding students to eat right and exercise, we can prevent the onslaught of Type 2 diabetes.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the incidence of diabetes among U.S. adults increased 41 percent between 1997 and 2003. Not surprised by this stunning statistic, the experts at Genesis Diabetes Care Centers in Davenport and Silvis have responded with a challenge to Quad Citians of all ages: Learn the steps that can lead to a healthier life and prevent diabetes.

“Preventing diabetes doesn’t have to mean an extreme change in lifestyle,” said Menke. “Simple changes, like moderate walking for exercise, can help you lose 7-10 percent of extra body weight. That alone cuts the risk for diabetes in half.”

Genesis Diabetes Awareness Week
The School Walk for Diabetes is one of many events during the week aimed at educating Quad Citians about the growing incidence of diabetes. The week will culminate with a Dec. 16 concert featuring legendary blues guitarist and 10-year diabetes survivor B.B. King, sponsored by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

Proceeds from the B.B. King concert will benefit the Genesis Diabetes Care Centers.
