Genesis, Hy-Vee Stores Plan Stroke Screenings

Davenport, IA – Every 45 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke. Stroke ranks as the nation’s third highest cause of death and is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability.

During American Stroke Month, the Genesis Stroke Program will partner with area Hy-Vee stores to provide risk assessment screenings.

The screenings will include a reduced-cost cholesterol and comprehensive blood panel test. The test offers a lipid profile and 14 chemistry tests that assess overall health. Cost will be $20 (check or cash).

Staff from the Genesis Stroke Program also will check blood pressure and educate participants on how metabolic profile and blood pressure results can identify a person’s stroke risk.

The blood draws will be administered by Metropolitan Medical Lab, and the lab at Genesis Medical Center, Illini campus. For the most accurate results, do not eat 12 hours prior to blood test. It is OK to take water and medications.

Here is the screening schedule:

Wednesday, May 4
Bettendorf Hy-Vee, 2900 Devils Glen Road. The blood draw will be administered by Metropolitan Medical Lab from 8-11 a.m.

Wednesday, May 11
Silvis Hy-Vee, 2001 5th Street. The blood draw will be administered by Genesis Medical Center, Illini Lab from 8-11 a.m.

Wednesday, May 18
Moline Hy-Vee, 4218 Avenue of the Cities. The blood draw will be administered by Genesis Medical Center, Illini Lab from 8-11 a.m.

Friday, May 27
Davenport Hy-Vee, 2351 West Locust Street. The blood draw will be administered by Metropolitan Medical Lab.

The Genesis Stroke Program is the area’s only dedicated stroke unit and the only program in the region recognized as a Primary Stroke Center by the American Stroke Association. Genesis Stroke Center services include inpatient physical rehabilitation and a stroke prevention and recovery center in Bettendorf.

The Genesis Stroke Program has Tissue Plaminogen Activator (tPA), the clot-busting drug that can minimize disability when administered within three hours of a stroke’s onset.

Studies have shown that 75 percent of Americans cannot name the most common warning sign – sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.
