Training Available For Caregivers

SILVIS, Ill. – Taking care of a spouse or relative on a full-time basis can require special skills.  Genesis VNA and Hospice and the Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging will provide training to caregivers who want to learn those skills in September.

Three 90-minute programs on caregiver skills will be held at the Larson Center of Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus on Sept. 5, Sept. 12 and Sept. 27.  All programs in the series are free.

Topics will include proper physical care, home safety and personal response systems.

Here is more information about the programs:

Sept. 5 – 2-3:30 p.m. – Topics will be proper care of feet and toenails; nutrition, portion size and boosting caloric intake for those with poor appetites. An RN and a dietitian will present the program.

Sept. 12 – 2-3:30 p.m. – Tips on providing a safe home; proper transferring techniques and proper fitting and use of assistive devices; adaptation in the home and energy conservation techniques. Physical and occupational therapists from Genesis VNA and Hospice will present the program.

Sept. 27 – 2-3:30 p.m. – Tips on home safety and personal response
systems, including File of Life and Lifeline; the aging process and
coping with dementia. Community Outreach RNs, Lifeline Coordinator and Genesis VNA home health nurse will present the program.
