Scrubs On-Demand At GMC, Davenport

ScrubEx Organizes Supplies, Prevents Misuse and Loss

Davenport, IA – Clean scrubs on the floor and scrubs that disappear from locker rooms are a frustration for users and an unnecessary expense for Genesis Medical Center, Davenport.

Genesis Medical Center, Davenport will prevent misuse and loss of scrubs by providing automated scrubs dispensing machines at both Davenport hospitals beginning Jan. 18.

ScrubEx systems are convenient, cost-effective distribution systems for scrubs.  Each time soiled scrubs are placed in the lower section of the unit, clean, right-sized scrubs for the same individual will be available immediately from slots at the top of the unit.

Hospital staff and doctors in Obstetrics, Neonatal Intensive Care, Operating Room, Post-Anesthesia Care, Endoscopy and Radiology will be authorized users of ScrubEx.

ScrubEx units will be located in the men and women locker rooms at the East Rusholme St. hospital.  ScrubEx units will be located in the men and women locker rooms at the West Central Park St. hospital.

Authorized staff and doctors will use a punch code system to access the unit.

Authorized Genesis ScrubEx users will be allowed to have two sets of scrubs at any one time.  If the user already has two sets of scrubs out, one must be returned before clean scrubs are distributed.  A digital recording system will track user activity and prevent the return of incomplete sets of scrubs.

The present distribution system at Genesis is that clean scrubs are available in open storage shelves.

“After visiting the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, we are convinced Genesis staff will embrace the new system like physicians and nurses at Wisconsin have,’’ said Al Loeffelholz, Manager of Logistics, Genesis Medical Center. “It only took a short adjustment period for users to realize the improvement of the scrubs dispensing machines, and now staff there would not go back to the old system of scrubs on open shelves.’’

ScrubEx was developed by Georgia-based IPA to help hospitals reduce linen and scrub losses, reduce misuse, and reduce the amount of money spent on resupplying inventories.  The University of Wisconsin has experienced decreases in laundry expenses and scrubs replacement costs with savings projected to exceed $185,000 annually.

ScrubEx systems are being used at more than 100 of the top hospitals and health care systems in the United States.
