Learn Easy Steps to Prevent Falls
DAVENPORT, IOWA - Each year, more than 1.6 million older Americans go to the emergency room for fall-related injuries. Among older adults, falls are the No. 1 cause of fractures, hospital admissions for trauma and injury-related deaths.
In Scott County alone, reports show that within an eight-month period, 17 deaths were a direct result of falling.
Don’t be a statistic. Learn how falls happen and how to prevent them on Wednesday, June 27, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Isle of Capri Convention Center, 1777 Isle Parkway, Bettendorf. The event is free to the public. Reservations are not required.
The event is hosted by the Generations Area Agency on Aging, in partnership with Genesis VNA and Hospice, Scott County Health Department and the Trinity Visiting Nurse and Homecare Association.
Learn about Scott County’s Yellow Dot Project; assistive services and devices; falls risk assessment; exercises for improved balance; Senior Voice and the File of Life; advance care planning; and health care fraud prevention. Among the experts to speak will be Conway Chin, D.O., medical director of Genesis Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Doug Boleyn, CTRS, manager of Outpatient Rehabilitation Services and Therapeutic Recreation at Genesis, Davenport.

The first step to preventing falls is to make an honest assessment of the risks you may have and share them with your health professionals. The second step is to take action. Get regular exercise; make your home safer; review medications; and have your vision checked.
