Genesis VNA Schedules Public Flu Clinics

DAVENPORT, Iowa – Genesis VNA and Hospice plans to immunize 7,300 residents of the region in October, November and December to protect them against seasonal flu and pneumonia.

The first of more than 70 public clinics provided by Genesis VNA and Hospice will be held Oct. 15 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Quad City Radio Group. The radio group is located at 3535 East Kimberly Road, Davenport.

Another highlight of the schedule is the Nov. 3 clinic.  Genesis will host a clinic prior to the Quad City Flames’ American Hockey League game with the San Antonio Rampage at the i wireless Center.  Immunizations will be available from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that individuals receive flu shots in October or November but the CDC cautions that influenza seasons vary in timing and duration.

“In setting up the clinics, we use the CDC guidelines but the pattern in recent years has been flu seasons that arrive later,’’ said Bharat Motwani, M.D., infectious disease specialist, Genesis Medical Center. “Considering that pattern, the optimum time for receiving a flu shot in this area would seem to be later in October and through November.’’

The CDC recommends that individuals in the following groups be vaccinated annually:

• Children aged 6 months until their 5th birthday.
• Pregnant women.
• People 50 years of age and older.
• People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions.
• People who live in nursing homes and other long term care facilities.
• Household contacts of persons at high risk for complications from the flu.
• Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months of age (these children are too young to be vaccinated)
• Health care workers.

Medicare Part B covers flu and pneumonia immunizations.  Anyone with Medicare Part B coverage can present their card and Genesis VNA will file the claims.

If you are not covered by Medicare, there will be a $37 cash cost for each flu immunization and a $40 cash cost for each pneumonia immunization.  Credit cards are not accepted at the clinics.
