Dr. Gellhaus Joins ACOG Executive Board, Chairs District

DAVENPORT, IOWA - Thomas M. Gellhaus, M.D., has joined the national Executive Board of The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a national medical organization representing more than 51,000 members  who provide health care for women.

In his new role, Dr. Gellhaus will chair ACOG District VI, which includes the states of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Dr. Gellhaus is with Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialists, P.C., in Davenport. He also is a clinical associate obstetriciangynecologist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Gellhaus has a special interest in legislative affairs and is active both at the state and national level. In addition to his new position, he is a new member of ACOG’s Committee on Government Relations and Outreach. He is a former ACOG McCain Fellow, a prestigious fellowship where he worked on patient protection legislation and other women’s health issues. He also completed a Public Health Service primary care fellowship sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a highly competitive, six-month intensive curriculum designed to increase the ability of primary care leaders to effect health policy at institutional, local, state and national levels. On the state level, Dr. Gellhaus has been a member of the Legislative Committee of the Iowa Medical Society.

Over the past decade as an ACOG Fellow, Dr. Gellhaus has served as vice chair and chair of ACOG’s Iowa Section. He has served as treasurer and vice chair of ACOG District VI, as well as co-chair of District VI’s Legislative Committee. Dr. Gellhaus is a past member of ACOG’s Committee on International Affairs.

Dr. Gellhaus also is a past president of the Mississippi Valley Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Scott County Medical Society, where he has been a delegate to the Iowa Medical Society. He is a member of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopy, American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, American Urogynecology Society, and the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

He also is a medical director of Medical Ministry International, which coordinates volunteer physicians for short-term medical and surgical missions to foreign countries. He and volunteer physicians have performed more than 1,200 surgeries for patients in need in several countries, including Bolivia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, and Tanzania.

A native of South Dakota, Dr. Gellhaus received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. He received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma, College of Medicine. He began his residency training in pathology at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
