Cancer Retreat Planned for Patients, Families, and Friends Feb. 23-24

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The Quad-City Cancer Education Consortium is offering “Understanding Cancer” their bi-annual Cancer Get Away Weekend, Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Best Western Steeplegate Inn, 100 W. 76th St., Davenport.

Among the sponsors are Genesis Health System and Trinity Regional Health System.

The Get Away Weekend is for cancer survivors, people in treatment, their family members, caregivers and friends.  This unique event focuses on survivorship issues and gives participants the opportunity to share, listen, learn, grow and meet others who understand the cancer experience.

The event begins with registration at 6 p.m. on Feb. 23 and concludes at 4 p.m., Feb. 24.

Scott Burton, cancer survivor, stand-up comic, and former national champion juggler, is this year’s keynote speaker.  Scott tells of his year-long battle with cancer through comedy, helping others find joy and productivity throughout adversity.  Scott has also written a book about survivorship titled, “A Life in the Balance,” which has received glowing reviews.

In addition to the keynote address, the weekend offers participants a time to learn more about cancer and its treatment options, deal with the feelings that surface, gain new coping skills, and meet others who are going through similar situations.

A number of programs will be offered throughout the weekend that include: advocacy, Medicare Part D, spirituality, nutrition/supplements, massage and more.  Children’s activities sponsored by Gilda’s Club are planned throughout Saturday. 

Fee is $89 per room (up to four people) and includes breakfast and lunch buffet.  Groups of more than four will need an additional room, costing an additional $89.  The Best Western Steeplegate Inn features a tree-lined atrium, an indoor swimming pool, and Jacuzzi.  Some scholarships are available and pre-registration is required.  Deadline for registration is Feb. 12.  For more information, or to register, please call (563) 421-1908.
