Douglas Cropper Named CEO of Genesis Health System

DAVENPORT, Iowa –  Genesis Health System Board Chairman Edwin Motto, M.D. announced today that the board has named Douglas Cropper to lead the organization, effective March 2008.  This announcement follows an eight-month-long, nationwide search that began last March following the announcement of the retirement of the current Genesis CEO, Leo Bressanelli.

“Mr. Cropper comes to us from an excellent health care system, well-respected for its quality and performance,” Dr. Motto said.  “His credentials are impeccable and he brings with him more than 25 years of health care experience, with jobs ranging from operating room orderly to hospital CEO.  Doug also believes in the benefits of our community-based regional health care model.  Perhaps, most importantly, he shares our values and our passion for the Genesis mission, providing compassionate, quality health services for all those in need.”

Cropper is currently executive vice president of Inova Health System, based in Falls Church, Va.; and campus administrator of the 900-bed Inova Fairfax Hospital, named by U.S. News & World Report among “America’s 50 Best” hospitals in five specialties.

Between 1991 and 2003, Cropper held leadership positions with HealthEast, based in St. Paul, Minnesota.  His last assignment with HealthEast was CEO of St. Joseph’s Hospital and health system vice president. Cropper is a 1984 graduate of the University of Utah and holds a Master’s degree in Health Care and Hospital Administration from the University of Minnesota.

On his appointment, Cropper commented:  “I thank the Genesis Health System Board of Directors for their confidence in me.  My career goal is to lead a health system as CEO and Genesis is among the finest in the nation, an award-winning staff, a strong financial position and a committed local board to reflect the needs of the community.  Moreover, for me and my family, this feels a lot like coming home because we have roots in Iowa and the Midwest.  So, we’re very pleased.”

“My primary goal as CEO is to focus on quality,’’ Cropper added. “Genesis is already a leader in patient safety with a major investment in medical technology to ensure the highest quality of care possible.  I will support and build on those efforts and lead this organization to national recognition for the quality of the care we provide.”

Leo Bressanelli has led the nationally recognized Genesis Health System since its inception in 1994 with the consolidation of Mercy and St. Luke’s Hospitals in Davenport.
