Genesis Home Medical Equipment to Offer Free Wheelchair, Walker Tune-up
DAVENPORT, IOWA - Has your wheelchair or walker had routine maintenance or a safety inspection lately? If not, you may not be aware of an improper fit or potential safety hazards.
Genesis Home Medical Equipment is here to help with a free Wheelchair and Walker Tune-up Clinic from 10-11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8.
Bring your wheelchair or walker to the Genesis room at CASI (Center for Active Seniors, Inc.), where a trained equipment specialist will help test the proper fit and function of your wheelchair or walker. CASI is located at 1035 W. Kimberly Road.
“After inspection, we will do as much as we can for each person’s wheelchair depending on the needs and how many we have at the clinic,” says Mike Bunce of Genesis Home Medical Equipment. “If a wheelchair has safety issues, that will be conveyed to the owner. Wheel locks will be adjusted if necessary. Other repairs may be suggested, and patients may choose to have their provider make the repairs or can feel free to contact our office to perform them.”
Like a pair of shoes, people should always have their wheelchair or walker sized to meet their individual needs and size. Often, people will use items a short time, store them in a closet and then later pass them on to a friend or family member in need. To use borrowed items safely, always make sure you know what their limitations are.
Proper fit is essential, Bunce adds. “The chair really needs to be sized for the person. If it’s an improper fit, you can have someone struggling to reach over the armrests to propel the wheels. If it’s too narrow, they can get pressure sores on their sides. Footrests must be at the proper height or it can affect the position of your diaphragm and how you breathe. Some people need lighter-weight chairs.”
Genesis Home Medical Equipment is staffed with qualified and experienced professionals, including respiratory therapists, registered nurses, service technicians and customer service staff to help with home health equipment needs.
