Flames Jersey Auction Raises $32,155 For GenesiQuad City Flamess

MOLINE, Ill. -- Hundreds of school-age children who might not otherwise receive flu shots will be protected against the flu next winter thanks to the $32,155 raised by the Quad City Flames at the annual jersey auction.

The funds will go to the Genesis Compassion Fund, which supports various health care projects and health needs of regional residents.  One of those projects is a pilot program that provides elementary and middle school students with free flu shots.

Last fall for the first time Genesis Visiting Nurse Association went into Davenport schools and vaccinated more than 500 students. There are plans to expand the program next fall to reach more students.

"More so than in recent years, this winter we all recognize the importance of reaching as many people as possible with the flu vaccine,'' said Michael Hamaker, executive director of Genesis Home Health Services. "If we can prevent the spread of flu, while also keeping kids healthy and in school during flu season, there is benefit throughout the Quad Cities.''

Quad City Flames players showed they aren't only creative on the ice as they helped raise the funds after the game on Feb. 22.  Their skits entertained fans who paid as much as $2,550 for jerseys worn by the players in the game.

In the 13 years of jersey auctions, nearly $560,000 has been raised for the Genesis Health Services Foundation.

"We appreciate the Flames organization, players and fans who generously support Genesis each year through this auction,'' Hamaker said.
