Genesis Names Center For Breast Health After Long-Time Leader And Supporter Kenneth H. McKay, M.D.
In his life devoted to health in the Quad Cities, Kenneth H. McKay, M.D., was a surgeon, a chief of surgery, an administrator and was the first director of the Center For Breast Health at Genesis Medical Center, Davenport.
"Dr. McKay devoted his life in medicine to the Quad Cities region and to the hospitals that make up Genesis Medical Center in Davenport. Genesis is very pleased to now be able to recognize Dr. McKay and his family by naming the center the Kenneth H. McKay, M.D., Center For Breast Health,'' said Doug Cropper, President and CEO, Genesis Health System. "For years into the future, the Kenneth H. McKay, M.D., Center For Breast Health will serve women throughout the region, just as Dr. McKay did when he was in practice.
''The center will be legacy and tribute to Dr. McKay and his family."
The Kenneth H. McKay Center, M.D., Center for Breast Health provides women in the region with the latest diagnostic procedures and skilled breast health specialists in a single location. The center's team approach offers the combined resources of primary care physicians, radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, oncologists, psychologists, nurses, technologists and other support staff.
The Kenneth H. McKay, M.D., Center for Breast Health utilizes state-of-the-art imaging equipment and techniques to detect early signs of breast cancer in women with no complaints or symptoms. These breast images are the best way for our physicians to detect and treat breast cancer in its earliest stages.
The Kenneth H. McKay Center, M.D., Center for Breast Health also collaborates with the Genesis Cancer Care Institute to provide women with the latest treatment options, including clinical trials, which allow women with breast cancer to remain close to home for treatment.
Dr. Kenneth McKay died in 2007. He is survived by Joan, his wife of 56 years, and, three children, Meredith, Alison and Michele.
During his distinguished career in the Quad Cities, Dr. McKay was a general surgeon; he was a founding partner of Davenport Surgical Group; he was vice-president and later president of St. Luke's Hospital; he was chief of surgery; he was president of the Scott County Medical Society and, following his retirement from the practice of general surgery, he was the first director for the Center For Breast Health.
"Dr. McKay was instrumental in the development of the Center for Breast Health and we are very pleased that his name will forever be synonymous with the high standard of care that Dr. McKay provided for his patients," said David Aanestad, M.D., medical director of the Kenneth H. McKay, M.D., Center for Breast Health.
Dr. McKay and Joan McKay most recently served on the steering committee to make the Clarissa C. Hospice House a reality.
"We are so grateful for Dr. McKay's lasting contributions to health care in our community,'' said Missy Gowey, executive director of the Genesis Health Services Foundation. "How fortunate we are that he came to Davenport in 1961 and spent the remainder of his life here caring for patients.
"The endowment fund established by the McKay family to honor their husband, father and grandfather, will carry on Dr. McKay's legacy of service and compassion.
"It is an inspiring way to honor a truly exceptional physician and an appropriate way to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.''
