Illini Diabetes And Sleep Centers

Research shows a physical connection between Type 2 diabetes and sleep disorders. On the Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, sleep disorders and diabetes are connected by location, as well.

Sleep and diabetes services operate out of Bldg. 3, located at 1414 10th St. in Silvis, where there's new computer technology, carpeting, window treatments, linens and handicap-accessible restrooms and showers.

The close proximity of the two services makes sense: "Researchers believe there's a relationship between sleep apnea and Type 2 diabetes," says Vicki Loving, Manager of the sleep center. "Treating sleep apnea with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) not only helps people sleep better, but it also improves their blood sugar levels, which can reduce the risk of complications from diabetes like heart and kidney disease."

Sleep apnea sufferers are nine times more likely to have diabetes. The disorder causes a person's breathing to become irregular or briefly stop as the result of a collapsed airway.

Since the move to a larger office space a year ago, the Diabetes Care Center on the Illini Campus has been able to accommodate many more patients, says Coordinator Donna Sivertsen. "Our patients enjoy more accessible parking. We now do our own scheduling and patient registration; and the facilities are designed so we can see if we need to assist anyone from their car to the door."

The center offers the Quad Cities' only diabetes support group, individualized pre-diabetes support, and gestational diabetes classes in Spanish and English. The building also houses dietitian services. Check out the new interactive Diabetes Care Center Web site at www.genesishealth.com/diabetes.
