Vera French Foundation Hosts Special Viewing Of "Black Swan"

Vera French Foundation is sponsoring a free screening of "Black Swan" on Feb. 8 at Rave Motion Pictures Davenport 53rd to raise public awareness of mental health issues.

Genesis Health System and Rave Motion Pictures are sponsors of the screening at 7 p.m.  The movie will be followed by a discussion of mental health issues portrayed in the movie.

"Black Swan" tells the story of the repressed and tormented dancer Nina (Natalie Portman), who becomes consumed by the art.  Nina is cast as the white swan in "Swan Lake."  Lily is the new dancer who is cast as the "Black Swan."

Nina begins to display mental health issues as she develops an unhealthy rivalry with Lily.  Over time, the dark side of Nina's personality is more visible and she takes on more of the traits of Lily and the "Black Swan" character.

Portman won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Nina.

"At a time when there is a start of a national discussion about mental health disorders and mental health care, we hope people will join us for the movie and join the discussion,'' said Anne Tubbs, director of the Vera French Foundation.
