Dr. Metcalf named VP of Medical Staff Affairs for Genesis, Illini Campus

Peter J. Metcalf, M.D., has assumed the part-time position of Vice President of Medical Staff Affairs for Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus.

Dr. Metcalf, a pediatrician who has been active on the Illini Campus medical staff since 1994, was appointed by Flo Spyrow, President of GMC-Illini Campus. He began his duties effective April 1.

Working part-time as the physician executive leader will allow him to continue his pediatric practice at Genesis Health Group’s Silvis Pediatric Clinic, where he has been seeing patients since 2004.

In his executive position, which is new for the Illini Campus, Dr. Metcalf will serve as liaison between the GMC-Illini medical staff and the administrative team. GMCIllini has nearly 300 active, provisional and courtesy doctors.

One of Dr. Metcalf's goals will be to establish a hospital environment that welcomes, engages and respects physicians and their contributions to patient care delivery.

“Dr. Metcalf has served our community and the hospital for nearly 20 years in an exemplary manner and is extremely qualified for the position,” said Spyrow in making the announcement. “He is well known not only for his commitment to quality health care, but also for his tireless work to make sure all children, regardless of background or parents’ ability to pay, receive the medical care they need.

“His years of experience as a trusted medical staff leader and dedication to patients will serve Illini Campus well as we grow and offer more services to the area.”

Dr. Metcalf received his medical education at the University of Bristol, England; completed his residency training in Pediatrics in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and, is board certified in both Canada and the U.S.

He practiced in Southern Alberta for 17 years, where he established and ran a Level 2+ Neonatal Intensive Care Unit similar to the one at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport. He also served on the Alberta Perinatal Program Advisory Committee and was a member of the Board of the Alberta Medical Association.

Before leaving Alberta, he was part of a Canadian Government program designed to assist the Ukraine in modernizing its pediatric care in the immediate period after the collapse of the Soviet Union and spent some time in Kiev. He practiced for two years in British Columbia in a consulting capacity before relocating here in 1994.

Dr. Metcalf has been a member of the Medical Executive Committee at Illini since 1995 and has served on several hospital and health system committees. He was a member of the Genesis team that travelled to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

He is the Medical Director of the School Health Link Clinics in the Illinois Quad Cities, and served on the Rock Island County Health Board for a number of years. He was Medical Director of the Signature Physician Group, one of the three physician groups that merged to become Genesis Health Group, and served on the GHG Joint Operating Board for six years.

He has just completed four years as President of the Medical Staff at Illini Campus. He is currently Medical Section Chief at Illini and is involved with the ARNP program of the University of Illinois.

Dr. Metcalf and Karen, his wife of more than 40 years, live in Bettendorf. They have two children -- a daughter who lives in London, England, and a son who lives locally.
