Genesis Health System announced Friday, Feb. 1 that the purchase of Mercer County Hospital and Mercer County Nursing home has been completed.

The hospital has been renamed Genesis Medical Center, Aledo and the nursing home has been renamed Genesis Senior Living, Aledo.

"These facilities are tremendous county and community assets and by completing this purchase, Genesis is securing the future of both facilities for decades to come,'' said Doug Cropper, president and CEO, Genesis Health System. "We are excited as Genesis Health System takes both of these respected health care organizations into a new era.''

Cropper said reform in health care and innovations in health care technology have made it increasingly difficult for government-owned facilities to keep pace.

"Our goal is to bring Genesis core values, including patient safety and quality of care to Genesis Medical Center, Aledo and Genesis Senior Living, Aledo,'' Cropper said. "We'll provide nationally recognized care from Genesis close to home for residents of Mercer County, Aledo and the surrounding communities.''

Flo Spyrow, senior vice president of Genesis Health System, said Genesis
Health System has already been active in introducing new and expanded services to the hospital. Those services include expanded radiology,  expanded surgical options, additional specialists available in the community, and sleep medicine.

Genesis will move forward with a $11,700,000 renovation to modernize the hospital;  upgrading the infrastructure; enhancing medical technology; improving patient accessibility; and, expanding critical outpatient service areas in the Emergency Room, Laboratory, Physical Therapy, Radiology, and Surgery Departments.

Ted Rogalski, administrator of Genesis Medical Center, Aledo, thanked the communities served by the hospital for their support throughout the process.

"We have worked together over the last three years to secure the long-term future of quality health care through the purchase of the hospital and nursing home. We have a bright future ahead of us with many new and exciting opportunities to serve the community," said Rogalski. "More than ever before, patients from the area will be able to receive the care they need close to home.''

Improvements are also planned for Genesis Senior Living, Aledo with a significant investment in information technology and facility renovation.

Myron Higgins will continue as administrator of the nursing home.

The partnership between Mercer County Hospital and Genesis Health System began in 2009 under a management agreement to oversee day-to-day operations. The hospital has gone from a $700,000 annual loss to an average annual margin of $500,000.

Mercer County Nursing Home secured a management agreement with Genesis Health System in 2011.  After a successful public referendum, the Mercer County Board approved the sale of Mercer County Nursing Home for $2.25 million.

In addition to the name changes of the hospital and nursing home, Medical Associates Clinic, Aledo will become Genesis Health Group, Aledo.
