Genesis Receives 2015 Women’s Choice Award for Heart Care
Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street is a winner of the 2015 Women’s Choice Award as one of America’s Best Hospitals in Heart Care. It’s the second year in a row Genesis has earned the designation. Genesis is one of only 353 hospitals in the United States to qualify for this evidence-based designation, signifying a commitment to meeting the highest standards in heart care.
Because Your Heart Matters
The Women’s Choice Award is based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction, clinical excellence, and what women really want when it comes to treatment and a quality hospital experience.
“Our mission is to reduce the risk for women and their families so they can make smart health care choices,” says Delia Passi, CEO and Founder of the Women’s Choice Award, and former publisher of Working Woman and Working Mother magazines. “Genesis not only performed well clinically with regard to heart care measures, but it also had a high recommendation rate, a measure that is very important to women in choosing a hospital.”
The America’s Best Hospitals for Heart Care list is determined by first identifying the top 25 percent of hospitals across the nation that offer a minimum number of cardiac and/or vascular services. Only hospitals that perform well clinically with regard to heart care measures reported to Medicare, and also have a high Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) recommendation score, a measure that is very important to women in choosing a hospital, are selected. Data provided is totally objective and uniform. No subjective considerations are used to determine the award winners.
A System of Comprehensive Heart Care
“Heart disease is the greatest health threat women face. Through the efforts of our staff, we are helping the public become more aware of the gender-based differences in heart disease,” said Nidal Harb, M.D., Chief Executive Medical Director, Genesis Heart Institute, and Chief Medical Officer, Genesis Health System. “By recognizing that heart disease is different for women than men, we can improve treatment and save lives.
“This distinction recognizes our commitment to providing exceptional care for everyone.”
Genesis provides compassionate, quality patient services that meet the cardiovascular needs of the eastern Iowa and western Illinois. Through the Genesis Heart Institute, a multidisciplinary association of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and vascular surgeons collaborate on the best approaches to managing and treating cardiovascular disease. The Institute plays a key role in developing and implementing the latest evidence-based practices for cardiovascular disease. Through the Institute, patients have access to the most advanced devices, drugs, treatment protocols and research.
For example, Genesis was the first hospital in the Quad Cities to offer Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) as a treatment option for patients diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis. The minimally invasive procedure replaces a patient’s aortic valve without traditional open-heart surgery and while the heart continues to beat. Benefits of the TAVR procedure include significantly less pain than open heart surgery and shorter recovery time. The procedure is a life-saving option for patients considered too high-risk to tolerate an open heart surgery.
Experience In Matters of the Heart
In addition, Genesis has the most experienced heart surgeon in the Midwest, Dr. Dale Geiss, who has performed more than 12,000 cardiac procedures. Dr. Geiss is an expert in aortic valve-sparing techniques in adults and in mitral valve repairs, for which he is nationally regarded, and in surgical repair of congenital heart defects.
Other advanced treatments available at Genesis through the Heart Institute include pulmonary vein isolation cryoablation for heart arrhythmia; and laser atherectomy and drug-eluting balloon angioplasty for Peripheral Artery Disease.
The Women’s Choice Award sets the standard for helping women to make smarter choices for themselves and their families. The company and its awards identify the brands, products and services that are most recommended and trusted by women.
“As the primary healthcare decision makers, women account for about 90 percent of all family choices when it comes to matters of health. Making quick decisions goes against her grain and women are seeking more information than ever before when making healthcare or hospital selections,” added Passi.
The Women’s Choice Award is the only evidence-based quality designation that drives consumer and patient appreciation through education, empowerment and validation, and recognizes those that deliver a recommendation-worthy customer experience.
