PaintFest Will Brighten Environments For Cancer Patients
Cancer care providers, patients and survivors will brighten the care surroundings by forming a “painting army” participating in PaintFest America.
PaintFest is a national program of The Foundation for Hospital Art dedicated to softening the hospital environment with colorful paintings, wall murals and ceiling tiles. PaintFest America has scheduled cancer centers in all 50 states in 2016 to participate.
Cancer care staff from Iowa Cancer Specialists and the Genesis Cancer Care Institute, staff of Gilda’s Club of the Quad Cities, cancer patients, survivors, families and the general public can participate by painting pre-designed panels of artwork. The completed panels will then be displayed to add color and nature scenes, making the clinical environment more attractive.
Completed pieces will be displayed at Iowa Cancer Specialists, the Genesis Cancer Care Institute and Gilda’s Club.
A fourth piece will be painted by a cancer survivor and cancer patient. The state-themed piece will become part of a national “Stars of Hope’’ mural and eventually will be returned for display in Iowa.
The group of artists will paint the pieces from 10 a.m-noon on Tuesday, July 26 at the Genesis Cancer Care Institute in Pavilion 1 on the Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park Campus.
“Patients and their families can feel restricted and removed from nature if they are spending a lot of time being patients,’’ explained Genesis PaintFest organizer Carol Kovach. “PaintFest pieces can bring nature to the patients when they aren’t able to be outside a lot.
“Painting these pieces also gives patients, families and staff a chance to come together in a non-clinical way. It takes a team to treat cancer and this event can bring together that team in a different, beautiful way that others will enjoy for years to come.’’
PaintFest supplies all of the designs, paint, brushes, black markers for the lines of the design, table cloths and disposable aprons. Artistic ability is not required.
