Clerkships

Trish Halligan, Residency Coordinator with a resident.

Clinical clerkships are available for third year or fourth year medical students.  The clerkships in conjunction with the Genesis Quad Cities Family Medicine Residency Program are designed to provide a hands-on experience in family medicine as well as provide an opportunity to see how the residency program functions.  The balance of these dual goals is tipped in favor of the particular interests of the student who is performing the clerkship.

Each week the student spends the majority of the time at the program's satellite office in Blue Grass, Iowa.  Activities include seeing patients, taking histories pertinent to the patient's complaint, performing appropriate exams, and discussing differential diagnoses and plans with the staff physician.  Enough time is usually allotted to participate in all aspects of the office practice.  Additionally, some time is spent at the residency office in Davenport.  Here, the student has the opportunity to interact with residents and to see patients in the office setting.  Students also join the hospital rounding team and participate in noon conferences.  Opportunities to explore other areas of interest are available.

Although many students have arranged lodging with family and friends in the area, local accommodations can be provided for any interested student who does not have the advantage of nearby relatives.

Interested students can contact Trish Halligan at the Davenport office for further information.
