The launch of the new Genesis Cancer Care Institute will transform cancer care with the next generation of cancer-fighting technology, expanded and renovated facilities, and a new focus on services for cancer patients and their families.

The Genesis Cancer Care Institute will provide the community with both leading edge, cancer-fighting technologies as well as extensive social, emotional and educational support to our patients and their loved ones.

But most importantly, it is an investment that will extend and save lives for years to come. We are bringing the latest life-saving services closer to home for our local patients here in the Quad Cities who need to be near their families and friends.

New technology

In addition to a renovation and expansion, Genesis will introduce two cancer-fighting treatment weapons that are the latest and best available -- the TomoTherapy Hi-Art treatment system and the Varian Trilogy system.  With the acquisition, Genesis will be one of a very few elite cancer care facilities to offer both technologies.

Genesis will become only the second Iowa hospital and the first in the region to offer the TomoTherapy Hi-Art treatment system. The specialized CT scanner is an all-in-one treatment option because it not only acquires 3D images of a patient’s tumor but it can deliver the necessary radiation to a tumor with unprecedented precision while protecting the healthy surrounding tissue.

In early 2009, Genesis will be one of very few hospitals in the nation to offer the Varian Trilogy system, a versatile, image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) system. Varian Trilogy with BrainLAB ExacTrac Robotics will provide the Genesis Cancer Care Institute with the best methods for treating cancers of the brain and spine with radiation delivered with sub-millimeter accuracy.

Size and location of lesions will determine the treatment option that is best for an individual patient.

Genesis already made another major investment in cancer care, becoming the first health system to introduce digital mammography to the Quad Cities.

Digital mammography, the most advanced screening option for the early treatment detection of breast cancer, is part of a system of care at Genesis Center for Breast Health locations in Davenport, Bettendorf, Silvis and DeWitt.
