Chemo Drugs
Herceptin (Trastuzumab)
What Does It Look Like?
Clear liquid
How Is It Given?
Intravenous (IV)
Why Am I Taking It?
Herceptin is an anti-cancer drug that stops cancer cells from dividing. This drug is used for the treatment of breast cancer that has spread outside the breast. This drug is unusual as it only works for breast cancers that are positive for a special protein called HER2. This is a test that is done on your actual tumor cells. Herceptin may be given in combination with other chemotherapy drugs. If so, the side effects may be more frequent and severe.
What Side Effects May Occur?
You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report any problems to your doctor.
Diarrhea, Nausea and Vomiting
Other
-
During the first dose 40% of patients have fever and/or chills. The chills can be severe.
-
Some patients have also experienced headache, dizziness, shortness of breath or rash.
-
These side effects tend to be milder with future doses. Let your doctor or nurse know if you have any of these side effects.
-
Medications will be given to help if you develop these problems.
-
Some women develop pain at the areas of the cancer. You may need to take more of your pain medicine until the pain improves.
-
Allergic reactions may occur (mostly with the first dose). Tell your doctor or nurse if you develop hives, rash, itching or feel like you have a fever. This can progress to a severe reaction so keep your nurse or doctor informed. You will be monitored closely and the drug may need to be stopped until the symptoms go away.
Heart Problems
-
Tell your doctor or nurse if you develop any swelling in your body, chest pain, shortness of breath or increased tiredness. If you already have heart problems you will be monitored very closely. You may have some heart tests to monitor your heart function. If you are receiving other anti-cancer drugs that may cause heart problems, this may also increase your chances of developing heart problems.
