Chemo Drugs

Hycamtin (Topotecan)

What Does It Look Like?

Yellow to yellow green liquid

How Is It Given?

Intravenous (vein)

Why Am I Taking It?

Hycamtin has been approved for the treatment of ovarian cancer after previous treatment with other chemotherapy drugs was not completely effective. Because of the unique ways Hycamtin works, even cancers that are resistant to other forms of chemotherapy may respond to Hycamtin.

What Side Effects May Occur?

You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report any problems to your doctor.

Low Blood Counts

  • A drop in blood cell counts (especially white blood cells), occurs about 11-15 days after treatment. Red blood cell and platelet transfusions may be necessary. A drug to counteract the low white blood cell count may be used. Frequent blood tests will be done to monitor your blood cells.
  • Call your doctor if you notice any signs of infection or bleeding.
  • Avoid situations where you might be exposed to people with infections.

Gastrointestinal Problems (Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation)

  • Although patients have experienced some or all of these side effects, in many cases, they have been relatively mild and easily managed with medications available from your doctor.

Hair Loss

  • Many patients experience some hair loss and about 40% experience total hair loss.
  • The hair grows back after treatments are completed.

Special Notes

  • Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm counts may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
