Bladder Irritation/Bleeding

  • Usually avoided with good fluid intake and frequent urination.
  • While getting IFEX and for a period of hours after, you may receive Mesna (Mesnex). This reduces the chance of irritation and bleeding of the lining of your bladder. It does not inhibit any of the other side effects of IFEX. It may not be completely successful in stopping bladder irritation resulting in bleeding, so your urine will be checked for blood every day while you are receiving the drug. The doses of Mesna you will be getting rarely result in side effects. Some side effects might be nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  • Void at the first sign of bladder fullness.
  • If you notice blood in your urine or other bladder problems after you go home, call your doctor.

Low Blood Counts

  • A drop in blood cell counts, especially whit blood cells and less so, platelets, occur about 7-14 days after treatment.
  • Avoid situations where you might be exposed to people with infections.
  • Call your doctor about any signs of infection or bleeding.
  • Your blood will be drawn occasionally to check your blood counts while you are receiving therapy.

Nausea, Vomiting, Appetite Loss

  • Medication will be prescribed to help control any nausea or vomiting.

Skin Irritation

  • Redness and soreness at intravenous insertion site--report any burning or discomfort at venipuncture site to your nurse immediately.

Nervous System

  • Drowsiness, sleepiness, and/or confusion may occur.

Special Notes

  • Drink 2-3 quarts of liquid daily. Empty your bladder frequently during the day, at bedtime, and any time you wake through the night.
  • Changes in your menstrual cycle or sperm count may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive or to father children while taking this drug.
