Phenergan (Promethazine)

What Does It Look Like?

• Tablet
• Syrup
• Suppository
• Clear liquid

How Is It Given?

• Oral (by mouth)
• Rectal suppository
• Intravenous (vein)

Why Am I Taking It?

To prevent or treat nausea and vomiting. It is also used for sedation. Phenergan is not an anti-cancer drug.

What Side Effects May Occur?

• May cause drowsiness, dizziness, or thickening of mucous.
• Less frequent effects include blurred vision, dryness of the mouth, nose, or throat, feeling faint, sensitivity to the sun, decreased sweating, increased appetite.
• Notify your doctor if you develop severe drowsiness, shortness of breath, flushing, redness of the face or muscle spasms.

How Do I Take This Medication?

• May be taken with food or milk to lessen stomach irritation.
• Do not double dose if missed, but take it as soon as remembered. If it is almost time for the next dose, resume regular dosing schedule.
• Avoid using alcohol while on this medication. Use extreme caution performing tasks that require alertness. Use sugarless candy or gum for relief of mouth dryness.
• Store at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture.
