How Is It Given?

Orally (mouth)

Why Am I Taking It?

Tamoxifen is an anti-cancer drug that stops cell growth by blocking the hormone estrogen. This drug is used to treat breast cancer. It is also used to help reduce the risk for breast cancer development in certain women.

What Side Effects May Occur?

You may experience some, all, or none of those listed. Most side effects do not last long. Tell the doctor or nurse about any that you notice. The information here does not include all possible side effects; others may occur. Please report any problems to your doctor.

Menopausal Symptoms

• Hot flashes, nausea, weight gain may occur.
• Usually disappear after a tolerance for the drug develops

Special Notes

• Occasionally there may be a temporary increase in tumor pain when starting Tamoxifen therapy.
• May cause menstrual period changes and vaginal dryness and itching.
• Changes in your menstrual cycle may occur. Discuss birth control measures with your doctor as it is not advisable to conceive children while taking this drug.
• Your doctor will talk with you about additional side effects if you are taking tamoxifen as a breast cancer prevention drug.
