PULSE Program
Do you have diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure? If so, you may know that you are at increased risk for heart disease. However, what many do not realize is that they may take part in and benefit from cardiac rehabilitation.
Cardiac rehabilitation is not just for those who have experienced heart failure. Studies have shown that older adults, women, and people who are at increased risk of developing heart disease can reap the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation.
PULSE Program Debuts
The Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus PULSE program, or People Utilizing Life-Saving Exercise, is set to debut within the Moline Two Rivers YMCA in early spring 2003.
The PULSE program is an individualized, medically supervised exercise program that focuses on primary and secondary prevention of heart or cardiovascular disease. “This program will help people to gain a clear understanding of the prevention of heart and cardiovascular disease, as well as broader insight into their overall health,” says Shari Gall, R.N., Illini’s Director of Cardiac Rehab.
Healthcare professionals including cardiac nurses and exercise physiologists staff the PULSE program. ”Our staff will help participants to maintain or improve their cardiovascular fitness while teaching important self-monitoring skills to enhance lifetime exercise habits,” Gall says.
Those who may benefit from cardiac rehabilitation if they:
-
Are at increased risk for any form of cardiovascular disease.
-
Have a family history of any form of cardiovascular disease.
-
Have angina.
-
Have heart disease or have had heart catherization.
-
Have heart failure.
-
Are medically stable after having had a cardiac event.
-
Have had a device inserted to keep your heartbeat regular (such as a pacemaker).
Partnering For Health
The partnership between Illini Campus and the Y exemplifies the hospital’s commitment to preventative health and will lead to more cooperative efforts in the future, says Chuck Bruhn, CEO of Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus. “The Y and Illini Campus share a tradition of serving the community ¾ each striving to improve the health and well-being of generations of Quad City-area families.”
In addition to exercise, Illini’s cardiac rehabilitation program will offer more services at the Y, including the use of a new computer program that measures quality of life, dietary habits and functional capacity. Illini Campus will also offer physical therapy services, fitness screenings and medical consultations to other Y customers at the facility.
The Two Rivers YMCA is nearing completion in Spring 2003 of a $5.5 million renovation and construction project that includes a therapy and aquatic center, additional room for childcare, a comprehensive Wellness Center, teen facilities and locker room renovation.
