Cardiology - Heart Hero

Genesis Health System Leads the Region for Heart Care

For more than 29 years as eastern Iowa's powerhouse, Genesis Medical Center, Davenport, Iowa, is the lead center for the health system's heart care services. Open heart surgery and interventional cath lab procedures take place here. Genesis Medical Center is also a dedicated facility for diagnosing and treating abnormal heart rhythms.

Other locations for heart care include Illini Hospital in Silvis (IL) and DeWitt Community Hospital in DeWitt (IA). Illini Hospital provides diagnostic testing, cardiac catheterizations and cardiac rehabilitation. DeWitt Community Hospital offers non-invasive cardiac testing and an outreach clinic.

Heart specialists performed more procedures at Genesis Medical Center than anywhere in the Quad Cities. Last year specialists performed:

  • 374 open heart procedures
  • 4,148 heart catheterizations
  • 2,268 angioplasty procedures
  • 1,278 procedures on patients with abnormal heart rhythms

The health system's state-of-the-art facilities and technology is allowing specialists to better care for their patients. Genesis Medical Center has spent more than $7.5 million to upgrade and expand heart care capabilities. These include four cardiac catheterization labs, two electrophysiology labs, and two new surgical suites capable of handling robotic technologies. These have been added to prepare for advances in open-heart surgery. Specialists are now using a new revolutionary all-digital cardiovascular imaging system, which allows cardiologist to view hard-to-see vessels with exceptional clarity and under the most difficult conditions. This will benefit more than 4,100 patients a year that receive catheterization at Genesis Medical Center.

Illini Hospital has upgraded its $1.2 million Cardiac Catheterization Lab to facilitate emergency angioplasty procedures. Illini is the first facility in the Quad Cities to perform emergency interventional catheterization without an open-heart program.

Committed to Research

Specialists at Genesis Heart Institute are researching and responding to our region's changing heart care needs. Specialists actively participate in community education on the risks and how to lower them.

Preventing heart disease and preventing a reoccurrence of heart problems is critical to the Heart Institute's mission. Extensive clinical research gives patients access to new procedures, drugs and medical devices much sooner than many other areas. More than a dozen specialists are conducting more than 30 clinical trails for drug therapy, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology and surgery. Genesis has been a site of clinical trails since 1990, with a formal department established in 1997. Since that time the amount of research has significantly expanded.
