The highly trained professionals of Genesis Health System Sleep Centers are available to help with diagnosis, treatment and the long-term management of sleep disorders.
The Sleep Disorders Center at Genesis Medical Center, opened in 1982, is the region’s only Fully Accredited Sleep Center. DeWitt’s sleep clinic works closely with Genesis Medical Center to provide patients with comprehensive treatment and diagnostic testing. Physician consultation for diagnostic testing is now available at Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt every other Friday. Patients may be referred to Genesis Medical Center’s Sleep Lab for further specialized tests. Patients at the sleep centers undergo comprehensive evaluation, testing and treatment provided by experienced staff members who are specialized in sleep disorders. Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus Sleep Center is staffed by registered sleep technologists. Patient education, testing and treatment are available for those who may be suffering from sleep disorders. Sleep studies, called polysomnography, are conducted with patients who show signs of sleep disorders to diagnose a particular condition such as Sleep Apnea, Periodic Limb Movements of Sleep, Insomnia, Parasomnias and Narcolepsy. Other tests are available to help with diagnosis such as the MSLT and the MWT, which help determine the level of a patient’s sleepiness. The testing rooms at the centers are private, comfortable, and quiet. Tests during a sleep study are painless and do not interfere with normal sleep. Sleep studies are evaluated at Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park and Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt by physicians who are specially trained in sleep disorders medicine. Treatments often include individual therapy, education, self-monitoring, sleep hygiene, and relaxation exercises.
Patients suffering from Sleep Apnea, a condition that reduces the amount of air intake while sleeping, may be treated with CPAP or BPAP titration, which is a device that opens a patients airways to allow proper breathing during sleep. This device can be ordered for home use with recommendation from physicians that are board certified in sleep disorders.
Sleep Clinics are located at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport and Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt. Patients may self-refer or be referred by their family physicians to the sleep programs. The clinics use multi-disciplinary approaches to solving patients’ sleep problems. This means that all factors relating to a sleep disorder (like psychological and environmental effects) are taken into account. After a patient has been seen at a clinic, a team of professionals will review existing medical information and assess the sleep problem. Specialized testing such as polysomnography, MSLT or MWT are available to assist in diagnosis.
