Sleep studies are used to diagnose sleep disorders such as:
- Sleep Apnea - cessation of breathing
- Myoclonus - leg jerks
- Insomnia - inability to sleep
- Parasomnias - sleep walking, night terrors
- Narcolepsy - inability to stay awake
Before you have your sleep study, read these items below to help you prepare.
How to Prepare for a Sleep Study
- Eat your normal meals, but do not ingest any caffeine 6 hours prior to your admission time.
- Do not nap the day of the test.
- Shampoo your hair the day of the test. Do not use oils, conditioner, or hair sprays. A clean scalp is necessary to attach the discs for the test.
- Bring pajamas or something comfortable to sleep in. If you prefer, we will supply a hospital gown.
- Bring any item that will help you relax while you are in the lab: a favorite pillow, bedtime snack, book, or magazine.
- If you are a male, please shave unless you have a beard or mustache, then shave around mustache or beard.
- Bring your own personal hygiene items stuch as toothbrush, toothpaste, and shampoo. A shower is available for you in the morning.
- All nighttime medications should be taken prior to arrival at the sleep center. Medications are not dispensed or administered by the sleep center personnel.
You will fill out a questionnaire concerning your sleep habits, and then you can prepare for bed. A technologist will apply several small discs to you scalp and face that monitor your brain waves, eye movement, and muscle activity. A sensor will be placed at your nose to monitor airflow and elastic bands will circle your chest and abdomen to measure breathing effort.
A light sensor will be taped to your finger to measure the amount of oxygen in your blood. Two small discs will be placed on each leg to record any leg movements during sleep. Despite the monitoring devices, most patients find it easy to fall asleep.

Due to frequent changes in insurance requirements, please check with your insurance company (call the 800 number on the back of your insurance card) to make sure that these physicians are in your insurance network. This is necessary to ensure insurance payment of their interpretation fee.
