Sleep Disorders

Welcome to the Genesis Sleep Disorders Web Site. Sleep Medicine is a relatively young field. The world's first sleep center was founded at Stanford in 1970. The Genesis Sleep Center evolved from the former Mercy and St. Lukes Hospitals. We started the service in 1982 and became the second accredited sleep center in Iowa in 1986.

There are many identified types of sleep disorders, and I'm sure more to come. Significant discoveries in the past few years have increased our understanding of sleep and it's disorders. Still, we are not even sure why we need sleep, though we can't survive without it.

We have come a long way from the time when narcolepsy was thought to be a psychological problem or the dozing sleep apneic patient just lazy.

This site will periodically be updated with brief articles about various sleep disorders.
