Why I Chose Weight Loss Surgery

By Eric Sanders

Eric Sanders Before and After His Weight Loss SurgeryHello! My name is Eric Sanders.

Here's a Little Bit About Me

  • I live in Sherrard, IL
  • I am 36 years old
  • I am married to my wonderful wife, Lisa, and have four children: Jacey, 19; Nick, 16; Karie, 15; and Brian, 13
  • I've been a big guy all my life
  • I started playing soccer at the age of ten, and that's where I got the nickname that has been with me to this day: Big E
  • I never really had a problem with being big until the last few years
  • About three years ago I started thinking about weight loss surgery. I'd known a few people that had it in the past, and was curious if it was the right move for me
  • I’ve tried a lot of different diets in the past and could always lose weight for a while. But then eventually I'd put it all back on

What I Wanted

  • I wanted to be able to go to an amusement park and ride the rides with my family, and not have to do a walk of shame at Six Flags because I couldn't fit
  • I wanted to not be out-of-breath and worn out at the end of my day
  • While I didn't have any health issues before my surgery, I knew it was only a matter of time before it happened
  • But more than anything, I wanted to be around to seem my four kids grow up and have families of their own

Numbers That Matter

  • When I started my journey in Jan. 2015, I was 396 pounds
  • By Aug. 31, 2015, the date of my surgery, I was 335 pounds
  • Now, one year after my surgery, I weigh 215 pounds

Weight loss surgery isn't just done in a day--it's a process that takes months to complete before and after the actual surgery. I will be posting monthly about my journey, and I hope you will join me.
