Genesis Grief Support Expands Services
Hospice and Spiritual Care Partner to Provide Compassionate Care to the Bereaved
We see even in nature that at the end of life,
its beauty carries on.
This year marks the start of a historic partnership. Two departments from three different campuses within Genesis Health System, Hospice Bereavement Staff and the Medical Center Spiritual Care Chaplains, began working together to provide grief support for the entire health system.
This grief support is free and reaches out to the greater Quad City population. Anyone is welcome to participate.
Those who have endured an end-of-life experience with a loved one as a part of the Genesis Hospice and Hospitals are encouraged to participate. The programming is entitled Grief’s Healing Journey
Grieving Families of the Hospital, Hospice and Whole Community Benefit
"Companions in Grief's Journey" are support groups for those who are grieving the recent loss of a loved one. They provide a place to gather to explore, share and process their feelings. They are facilitated by chaplains from spiritual care department.
These groups are open and ongoing, meeting each week at 2 p.m. on Fridays in the Larson Center at Genesis Medical Center, Silvis, and also the Wallen Room and at noon on Wednesdays in the Sunderbruch Room at Genesis Medical Center, West Campus.
Another step on Grief’s Healing Journey is a four-session grief education course offered bi-monthly at a Genesis facility called “Understanding Grief’s Journey.” Over four weeks attendees learn about the realistic expectations while grieving the loss of a loved one, the many emotional experiences of grief, awareness of secondary losses, and ideas for healing support.
Grief Educator and Counselor, Chaplain Jon Yarian said, “Many people prefer the classroom setting over a support group setting because they are not ready to talk about their story and/or their hurting. Others cannot wait for the next component of Grief’s Healing Journey so they can share how what they’ve learned applies and is helping them in their journey with grief!”
Following the course, an optional grief support group called “Healing on Grief’s Journey” is available with the instructor for all attendees. Classmates become a support group for each other, helping one another navigate feelings common to the experience of grief, providing comfort, reassurance and companionship.
""Grief's Healing Journey Brings Blessings to Many
The beauty of a relationship reaches
beyond this world and our words
to carry love and inspiration.
The depth of your grief is a reflection of your extraordinary capacity to love. Grief is a natural and normal way of coming to terms with your loss.
Genesis Health System’s mission “to provide compassionate, quality health services to all those in need” is not just about healing the physical wounds of the body--Grief’s Healing Journey programming helps heal the heart.
