Get Stress and Anxiety Relief with Hypnotherapy

By Brooke Lemke, Hypnotherapist at Genesis Health System

Anxiety is never good. Hypnotherapy can help. The majority of my clients, regardless of what they’re seeing me for, will report some kind of stress in their lives that is compounding their presenting issue. Sometimes that presenting issue just so happens to be stress, often times accompanied by anxiety.

Stress Impacts All

Who doesn’t have stress nowadays? Stress is present in most, if not all, areas of most people’s lives; work, relationships, finances, health, travel, education, etc. We cross one thing off of our list and we add another five!

Stress also comes from our thoughts, made up scenarios in our minds that don’t exist. We are focused on the future, running from one activity to the next, no longer living in the present. We stop enjoying the wonderful gift that is life!

Logically, we know stress can be a healthy and beneficial tool in our lives. It can drive us and motivate us to accomplish our work and our dreams. However, when it begins to control us and our lives, it no longer serves a healthy purpose, especially when this stress turns into anxiety.

Stress Versus Anxiety

Let’s start with the difference between stress and anxiety:

Stress is a pressure. Stress can be real or it can be perceived. Stress can be put on us by ourselves or others.

Anxiety is a fight/flight response. When we are under pressure (real or perceived), we become stressed which over loads the inhibitory process (the critical filter). Once overloaded, our fight/flight responses (i.e. anxiety) are triggered and we begin to operate off of our subconscious programming.

Once we’re in this state, the subconscious is in control and we lose our ability to use our logic and reasoning skills to make rational and healthy decisions. Then comes more stress from feeling out of control and the cycle starts over. We are no longer living in the present and we’re no longer in control. We are now in fight/flight and we’re stuck in a cycle.

How Hypnotherapy Helps

Hypnotherapy breaks this cycle. Each individual is different, and hypnosis works with the individual’s programming to break their personal cycle. How?

Turning off flight/fight response

By turning off the fight/flight response in moments when it’s not necessary, you can prevent the subconscious from taking over. This allows you to access your conscious so you can analyze the threat (stress), and utilize reasoning to make logical decisions to get you through the stress. We can’t always remove a stress from our lives, but we can control our reaction and response to it!

Understand your belief system

Next we look at your personalized programming that you’ve developed throughout your life. We call this your belief system. Maybe you were told “You’re not good enough” or, “You can’t do anything right” growing up, while at a job, or in a relationship. Maybe your parents were anxious people and you developed that anxiety from watching them.

Maybe you were told you always had to be on time so you’re afraid of being late. Maybe you have a fear of being alone, so caring for a dying loved one is stressful. Maybe you’ve lost everything you’ve ever owned in a bankruptcy or a divorce, and you fear losing everything again now that you’ve recovered.

These are just a few examples of what subconscious programming is and how it’s created. Once we find the programming, we’re able to change it. Maybe you want to change it to, “I am good enough and what I do is good enough”; or “There is no such thing as perfection”. The beautiful thing about hypnotherapy is that there’s no wrong or right--there’s only what’s right for you.

Personalized Care

There are a few other modalities we utilize in hypnotherapy for stress and anxiety that are dependent on the individual. For example, overcoming a fear or a phobia, releasing anger, finding forgiveness and acceptance, and so much more!

I love working with stress and anxiety, and I see it every day in my office. If you are interested in living a life where you are in control, please let me know! I would be happy to help!
