Hypnotherapy and Weight Management
By Brooke Lemke, Hypnotherapist at Genesis Health System
The holiday season is upon us! I see a lot of stress, anxiety and depression during the holiday season. However, since I’ve already written on those two topics, I’m going to focus on the topic of weight management!
'Tis the season for parties and overindulging followed by regret that leads us into the New Year with new promises to eat healthier and exercise more. But all too often we find ourselves breaking those promises and saying, “I’ll start tomorrow.”
The key with weight management is to start today and to start small; not Monday, not after the holidays, not after celebrations, but today!
Why start today? There is no such thing as a “perfect time” to start taking better care of ourselves. There will always be holidays and celebrations that we can use as excuses to not commit to being healthy. We are committed to our jobs, our families, and our friends--but why not to ourselves and our own health? We know when we’re healthier, it’s easier to give to others.
How Hypnotherapy Helps
When is comes to weight management in hypnotherapy, we look at your individual habits, patterns and goals so that we can take small steps towards a new lifestyle. This is not a diet that we’re going to drop off 20 pounds just to gain back 30. This is about creating new lifelong habits towards a life of health, wellness, energy--and maybe even a new wardrobe!
Why start small? We want to make lasting changes. In order to do that, we need our subconscious on board! Remember from previous blogs, changes can be threatening to the subconscious.
Every week we look at a new habit/goal, and we focus on making that change one step at a time. Small changes add up over time and they last!
Some common things I see around this goal that I can help you with include:
- Portion control
- Healthier choices with meals and snacking
- Drinking more water
- Improving sleep
- Exercising more
Also, if eating habits are out of emotional need, we work on those emotions. For example, stress eating, boredom eating, punishment/reward eating, and so much more.
A Personalized Plan That Fits You
How many sessions will it take? Depends on your goals and what your habits are that you want to break.
I always recommend weekly sessions, if possible, for the first month, and then spacing the sessions out every other week or once a month to stay on top of your goals.
We also hide the scale for the first several weeks, focusing instead on enjoying the lifestyle we’re creating and not the number on the scale. That number can be a cause of unnecessary stress which can lead to even more unhealthy choices.
How many times do you slip up or make a bad choice, thus seeing a higher number on the scale the next day? You might say to yourself, "Well, I’ve already ruined today. Might as well throw the rest of the day away, right?" There’s no need to stay in that rut! You can break it easier than you think, and the secret is your subconscious.
