Bone Density (DEXA scan)
What is a bone density scan?
A bone density test is an x-ray exam that determines how dense (strong) your bones are and whether you may be at risk for developing osteoporosis.
How should I prepare for my bone density scan?
To prepare for your test, please do the following:
- Wear loose, comfortable clothes. Sweat suits or shorts are preferred. Do not wear clothing that has zippers, buttons or metal grippers.
- If you have had recent x-rays with barium or dye, you will need to wait at least 7 days before completing the bone density exam.
- Please allow 30 minutes for the test when scheduling.
What should I expect during my bone density scan?
During the test, you will lie comfortably on a padded exam table. The scanned areas typically include the hip and spine. You will remain fully clothed as long as your clothing does not contain metal zippers, studs, buttons, etc.
